Witton Park Arena

Client Blackburn Harriers Athletics Club (Blackburn with Darwen Council) / Location Witton, Lancashire / Value £2.3M / Status Completed 2015

The £2.3m Witton Park Arena in Blackburn won a commendation from the Civic Trust in 2015 and was designed by the AST* team during their tenure at Capita | ESA.

The project was recognised for the significant contribution it has made to the quality and appearance of the local built environment, set in Green Belt and among the trees of a Grade II listed parkland.

The commendation also recognised that the scheme demonstrated an excellent standard of architectural design, low carbon technology and material sustainability, and is universally accessible providing a positive social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefit to the local community.

The scheme marries a striking 100m blind black metal box, nestled among the tree lined walks of Witton Park, with a dramatic cantilevering timber clad, gym and studio that peeks out from those trees as one approaches the park.

The scheme has been well received by all users and sets a standard for its intervention in the protected former Witton Manor Parkland, one of the most beautiful of Blackburn’s landscapes.

The project which is now home to Blackburn Harriers and Athletics Club.
